William Shatner

March 22, 2007

At his roast.

William Shatner is a legend. Not only did he single-handedly (forget Spoock and Boney-boy) make geekdom mainstream, but he then went on to become a TV cop of epic proportions before returning to his sci-fi roots, sort of, as The Big Giant Head. He is now winning Emmys by being the ultimate, prick lawyer. Through all of this, he has crafted an impressive backlog of recordings that’d make any musician burn with envy. Today might be the most impressive list of candidates, but Shatner wins hands down.

I recently read a rather entertaining couple of posts on Wil Wheaton’s blog about his encounters with “WILLIAM FUCKING SHATNER.”  Part one can be found here, and part two here. The rest of the site might be risque, but Wheaton’s story is top-notch. I think I agree with Wheaton’s sentiment that Shatner has apparently mellowed over the last few years, at least in public, and that’s a good thing. His Trek success obviously fueled his ego, but Shatner has some legitimate reasons to be high on himself.

Shatner has had tons of guest spots on all kinds of shows including Howdy Doody, he’s made appearances in movies including Judgment at Nuremberg and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and has had success as a full-time cast member in Star Trek, T.J. Hooker, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and Boston Legal. Shatner is quite simply a pop culture icon, and his musical career, while sparking some parody, is actually quite good for what it is. His 2004 release, Has Been, was easily one of the best albums of the year, and still gets some gets some action in my playlist.

Shatner is 76.

Other birthdays: Reese Witherspoon, Karl Malden, Elvis Stojko, Matthew Modine, Bob Costas, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Stephen Sondheim, and Marcel Marceau.

I watched Leno last night, and he wished William Shatner Happy Birthday too!

Hehe, yeah, I caught that. He said Shatner just turned 76, and his hair turned 5.
