Joe Flaherty

June 21, 2007

Had to make my own from the DVDs for Freaks and Geeks.

Joe Flaherty is awesome. Whether you recognize his name or not, you’ll almost assuredly recognize his face. He moved to Canada and became an integral part of the now legendary cast of Second City. He went on to do tons of minor parts in films and television, including some films involving former SCTV cast members like John Candy‘s Who’s Harry Crumb? He was also the Western Union man in Back the Future II, and had a memorable, and oft-quoted, role in Happy Gilmore. His best role by far though, was his time on Freaks and Geeks.

I just finished doing a mini-marathon of the show, and I think it’s the best dramedy ever to grace the small screen. The cast was superb, the soundtrack was perfect, and the writing was even better. Flaherty played the good-natured, old-fashioned father of Sam and Lindsay Weir played by John Francis Daly and Linda Cardellini respectively. The rest of the cast and crew, be it regular or guest, is an impressive list: Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segal, Busy Phillips, Samm Levine, Martin Starr, Leslie Mann, Paul Feig, Dave Allen, Natasha Melnick, Thomas F. Wilson, Lizzy Caplan, Joanna Garcia, Ben Foster, Samaire Armstrong, Ben Stiller, Rashida Jones, David Krumholtz, Sam McMurray, Jason Schwartzman, Allen Covert, Mike White, and of course, Judd Apatow.

That show, and the relationships formed as a result of it, has had a profound effect on the current trend in Hollywood and television in terms of comedy, and it too was canceled after only one shortened season. Those studio execs really know their stuff.

Flaherty is 66.

Other birthdays: Juliette Lewis, Meredith Baxter, Michael Gross, Tony Scott, and Jane Russell.
