Joss Whedon

June 23, 2007

Geek extraordinaire.

Joss Whedon has cemented himself as a living legend in the geek community. He started out writing for Roseanne of all things, but then wrote the script for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and created the subsequent series of same name. He also wrote a screenplay for Toy Story, but I’m not sure how much of his stuff hit the screen. He then wrote the script for Alien: Resurrection which was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Whedon also created a spin-off of Buffy, entitled Angel. His masterpiece is the tragically short-lived Firefly and the movie that followed, Serenity.

Firefly and Serenity are the perfect sci-fi shows. Cleverly written with strong dialog and character development, solid cast and characters that aren’t merely a clone of other sci-fis, strong production values, and ultimately just a great, realistic story line. Firefly is what Blakes 7 should have been. The genre doesn’t get any better than Firefly and Serenity. It may have its equals, but no superiors.

Despite much begging from his fans, it looks like the world of Firefly is forever absent from the big screen. However, he does have another project, Goners, in the works.

Whedon is 43.

Other birthdays: Frances McDormand, Selma Blair, and Jason Mraz.
