Liv Tyler

July 1, 2007

I think it's from Reign Over Me.

There are tons of people celebrating a birthday today, but I decided to go with Liv Tyler. I picked Tyler not because of her role in LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring, LOTR: The Two Towers, and LOTR: The Return of the King; or rather not solely because of that role, but because she also starred in Jersey Girl. I think Jersey Girl is Kevin Smith‘s best “movie” movie as opposed to a “Kevin Smith movie” movie. Unfortunately, the non-Kevin Smith fans didn’t see it because it was a Kevin Smith movie, and many Kevin Smith fans didn’t like it because it wasn’t a “Kevin Smith movie.”

The movie was just plain good.

The Smith fans who didn’t like the film probably only like his other movies because they can be a tad raunchy. That degree of raunchiness is only a means of telling his stories though, and his stories are usually more insightful than most people realize or give him credit for. I am disappointed in those Kevin Smith fans that didn’t like the film.

The non-Smith fan movie-goers were likely unaware of the quality of the film given the previews. They just saw another Ben Affleck film at a time when everyone in America was sick of hearing about Affleck and his hot love interest du jour. This group also includes those that adamantly hate Smith’s films regardless of topic or who the film stars. These people are usually not worth associating with anyway, and are therefore of no real concern.

Maybe I will do a review of the film sometime, because I feel that most people would like it if they just gave it a chance. I like it so much that I picked Tyler even though she starred in Armageddon, an otherwise tragic blight on her career. She is set to star in what appears to be a reboot of The Incredible Hulk. Maybe I won’t fall asleep during this movie as it’s directed by the guy that made Unleashed, which is a great film. She also did Reign Over Me with Sandler, but I haven’t seen it yet.

Tyler is 30.

Other birthdays: Dan Aykroyd, Jean Marsh, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Caron, Sydney Pollack, Pamela Anderson, Karen Black, Andre Braugher, Claire Forlani, Carl Lewis, Alan Ruck, Debbie Harry, Genevieve Bujold, and Jamie Farr.

I didn’t realize she is so close to my age. But then, movie stars seem to age much more gracefully than the rest of us, don’t you think?

Yeah, I think copious amounts of make-up, plastic surgery, camera tricks, and editing special effects have a lot to do with that generally.
