Kevin Smith

August 2, 2007

A few years old, but you get the idea.

I’ve said it several times, Kevin Smith is one of my favorite filmmakers.  His movies include: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, and Clerks II.  Smith also has two movies on the horizon: Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Red State.  I must say that I am not super-psyched with either of these projects at the moment.

I am super-psyched about a couple of other Smith projects.  Reaper is a TV show slated for the WB this fall.   I’ve already seen the pilot, and I loved it.  The basic premise is that a guy turns 21, and finds out his parents sold his soul to the devil before he was born.  Once he turns 21, he has to work as a bounty hunter for the devil, and return escaped souls to Hell.  The pilot was hilarious.  I am really looking forward to it, and hoping the WB keeps the show.  I am kind of curious to see if Smith is going to do all of the episodes though.  It would seem to put his movie projects on the back burner.

The other recent tidbit that has me excited is the news that Kevin Smith will write and direct the first episode of the new spin-off coming this fall, Heroes: Origins.   I’d imagine they’ll likely rotate directors much like they’ll rotate characters in the series which means this shouldn’t interfere with Reaper if Reaper gets picked up.

Smith has also done some limited acting outside his own projects.  He got good reviews for his role in Catch and Release, did some voice work for TMNT, and was pretty funny as an agoraphobic hacker in Live Free or Die Hard.  His blog is also a good read.

Smith is 37.

Other birthdays: Peter O’Toole, Wes Craven, Edward Furlong, Mary-Louie Parker, Joanna Cassidy, Jacinda Barett, Hallie Kate Eisenberg, and Victoria Jackson.
