The Moon will turn blood red on Wednesday

February 18, 2008

That’s a prophecy fairly easily fulfilled, eh? I didn’t realize that the Moon looks red because of the Earth’s atmosphere. Pretty cool. I will definitely take a look out the window on Wednesday.

That's no moon.

We looked at the Moon last night, but it was an eclipse, not red. Was it red where you were?

Yeah, it was pretty much red here. It depended on which stages you see it. As you can kind of tell from the picture, it’s red when partially eclipsed. When the Moon is completely covered by the shadow, it just looks black.

We forgot about it, because I was building someone a computer, but we caught it just after the full eclipse. As such, it looked red.

Apparently, the shadow also has a tint of blue (thanks to the Ozone) along the very edges. I think you need a telescope to fully realize that though.
