In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, a little punk that has been abused by his aunt and uncle’s family his entire life is invited to the Hogwart’s school of magic.  He soon discovers that his parents were murdered… and by a wizard.  Harry adapts to the world of magic, and unravels the mystery of his past.

Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Daniel Radcliffe, Richard Griffiths, Warwick Davis, Verne Troyer, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Tom Felton, John Cleese, David Bradley, and Alan Rickman.  Admittedly, the kids are much better in the second movie, but they do an ok job in the first.  Not that it really hinders the film too much, as the rest of the cast is rock solid, and excellent choices I might add.

Any soundtrack by John Williams is almost assuredly a ten.  This is no exception.

Quote/Catch Phrase

“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.”  “It does not do to dwell on dreams, Harry, and forget to live.”  Neither are truly great lines.

(EDIT from 2009 – I forgot Ron’s classic, “Troll boggies (sp?)

When this movie first came out, I thought, whoopee some dumb kids flic.  I figured I would watch the movie though as the conservative right denounced it for its use of magic and supposed evil themes.  A truly silly claim.  I was glad I watched it, however, as I grew to enjoy the movie series and then read the books.  Not a bad read at all.  Pretty good in fact.  Some of the highest grossing films of all time, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment, is due out next year and is the future release I look forward to more than any other, including the final installment of the Lord of the Rings and Red Dwarf the movie.

Rewatchability = 20

(EDIT from 2009 – At this point it appears that Red Dwarf movie will never be made, but there are four special episodes to be released this year.  So, that’s something.)

Total Score = 90

Another great PG film.  There really aren’t that many, so we should appreciate the good ones more.
