Little Nicky (2000 – PG-13)

Story

Certainly the most unrealistic of the Sandler films, Little Nicky follows the struggles of Satan’s half angelic son in his efforts to thwart his power hungry half-brothers and return his father to his rightful throne.  Since it is so over the top, however, the film is able to create some humorous scenes.

Cast

Adam Sandler, Patricia Arquette, Harvey Keitel, Rhys Ifans, Tom ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr., Rodney Dangerfield, Allen Covert, Peter Dante, Jonathan Loughran, Robert Smigel, Reese Witherspoon, Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, Jon Lovitz, Carl Weathers, Quentin Tarantino, Michael McKean, Blake Clark, Rob Schneider, Clint Howard, Leah Lail, Lewis Arquette, Ellen Cleghorne, Bill Walton, Regis Philbin, Ozzy Osbourne, Dan Marino, and Henry Winkler.  Jeeze.  That’s a lot of notable names.  A ton of Saturday Night Live alumni too… I count eight.  One thing really irritates me though, and that is the Ozzy Osbourne scene.  I think it would have been a lot funnier if they would have had Ozzy actually say his line, and then use subtitles at the bottom of the screen to enable the audience to know what he was supposedly saying.  I am not a big Reese Witherspoon fan or a Harvey Keitel fan either, and Patricia Arquette’s character was unlikeable.  At least by me.

Soundtrack/Score

A solid listing.  For the people who like the new crap we have a little P.O.D., a little old school AC/DC, and then some classic Scorpions.  A nice mix when you also throw in Incubus, Foo Fighters, Powerman 5000 (they have a great live show by the way), Linkin Park (also great live), Ozzy, and of course… Chicago.  Haha.  The only disappointment is no Metallica.  I mean come on.  He even has Metallica posters in his room.  Plus no Motorhead?  I don’t like Motorhead much myself, but he is a metal fan.  Two harsh discrepancies, but not enough to bring the score down.

Quote/Catch Phrase

“Chicago is awesome!”  There are others, but I don’t feel like posting them, but none as good as the quality stuff from Big Daddy.

Rewatchability

Some great scenes in this movie.  I particularly like the Jon Lovitz scene.  That is hilarious.  Certainly a good waste of time especially if you like Sandler.  Then again, I know a lot of people were upset with the religious undertones and perhaps sacrilege involved.  I don’t personally see that, but I do hate the Heaven scenes for two reasons.  One, it’s boring, and two Reese Witherspoon.  The triumphant return of Chubbs in that scene helps make up for it though.

Rewatchability = 16

(EDIT from 2009  – I lika me some Reese Witherspoon now.  Yeah, I still find the blond thing highly annoying, but that is the point.)

Total Score = 88

Letting Ozzy say his lines would have propelled this into the 90th percentile.
