Story

In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, a ship of pirates is cursed after stealing some Aztec gold.  They must retrieve all of the gold to lift their curse, and meanwhile a former captain of their’s is trying to get his ship back from them.  Along the way, a young man and woman fall in love against all odds.  You know, the typical piratey thing.

Cast

Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport, Jonathan Pryce, Lee Arenberg, Mackenzie Crook, Isaac C. Singleton Jr., Martin Klebba, and Zoe Saldana.  All in all, a pretty solid cast.  Johnny Depp was awesome, and Keira Knightley… uh huh.

(EDIT from 2009 – I thought about implementing some revisionist history here, but I think I prefer to see the transition from respect of Depp’s ability to complete abhorrence of him as a result of his consistently similar roles, and the mindless, irrational behavior of his sycophantic fans.)

Soundtrack/Score

Klaus Badelt’s soundtrack is fairly engaging, and serves the movie well, but certainly isn’t a total masterpiece.

Quote/Catch Phrase

“She’s safe just like I promised.  She’s all set to marry Norrington just like she promised.  And you get to die for it, just like you promised.  So we’re all men of our words, really, except for Elizabeth who is, in fact, a woman.”  “Me I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly.”  “Savvy?”  “Parley.”  Johnny Depp is awesome in this role, and has tons of awesome lines.

(EDIT from 2009 – I still don’t deny his performance in this role.  It was a fun watch, but I wasn’t enchanted enough to watch the follow up films.  Take that how you will.)

Rewatchability

A pirate movie.  Come on, what more do you want?  Ok, how about a charming leading lady?  A couple of attractive leading men?  A solid bad guy?  A monkey?  A friggin midget?!?  This movie has all of that and some nice animation work on the undead.  Another fine PG-13 film.

Total Score = 92

Great action, great lines, and a charming leading lady.  Got me hooked.  Watch it.  Savvy?
