Megapost of Craptasticness
I said I wouldn’t put several different links of interest in one post anymore, but today I am breaking that rule as I am too lazy to make multiple posts.
This first link is just a story about an interesting invention called a water mill that would allow people to retrieve clean water from the atmosphere through condensation. It’s a pretty cool idea, but I wonder how it would effect weather if everyone in say, NYC was using one? Also, would the water be clean if used in an area affected by nuclear fallout? It could happen.
This video is from Metallica’s most recent visit to St. Louis. The meet-and-greets always kind of weird me out, and make me feel sorry for the guys in the band. Don’t get me wrong, I would like to meet the guys in the band, but the meet-and-greets come off as more like herding cattle. I would probably do the same, but it just seems weird as a fan to say, “Hey, nice to meet you. Sign this please. And this. And initial here. Next.”
Anyway, the performance after the meet and great is interesting; particularly when Hetfield forgets a line, and then laughs about it. I don’t know how he keeps all the lyrics straight, and especially given the number of songs they rotate through on any given night.

Josh showed me this NSFW video spoof of Kirk and Spock set to NIN’s “Closer.” It is not safe for work or youngins based upon the lyrics of said song, and the implied relationship of the two ranking officers aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. Of course, that is precisely why the video is funny too. They even spoofed the original video of the song.

haha That NIN Star Trek style video is funny. I agree with ya about the meet and greets. I would find it awkward to be around whatever band and take pictures with them or whatever. Actually, I would like the picture taking part. You can be silly in those. But the “Can you sign this and this for me?”…nah. That’s just weird. Plus, I don’t see the point in signatures. People can forge those. I like pictures to remind me of better days. But, that is just my opinion.
Well, I have autographs from Blues players and what not, but I was there and know they’re authentic. Just to buy an autograph seems silly to me though for the reason you stated. I only associate value with the autographs I have, because I was there.
Exactly. I don’t understand why anyone would buy an autograph. I just meant I would think it would be weird for the artist to have someone ask you for their autograph.
Oh I see. I’d imagine it would be a nice ego-stroke at first, but I bet it gets old real fast.
Awesome video! It dawned on me after seeing James’s part and what Kirk does at the beginning of the song that it is very similar in structure to Fade To Black or Sanitarium. It is an outstanding song. I enjoy the album more and more with each listen. It is a great album. Did you get to see the show?
I didn’t watch all of the Star Trek vid but I got the point. Funny, but sick and wrong! Amazing what someone twisted out there can do to something as cool as old Star Trek!
Yea on the meet and greets I always thought that would be cool but it is a cattle show like you said. Just push em through. It would almost be better to visit for say, 20 minutes a clip with say 5-10 lucky people and just chit chat a bit. I bet that would get weird too. I’d love some signatures and pics with the guys, but either way, you wouldn’t be connecting much at all. The concert is the true connection to them anyway. Yea, it was uncomfortable to watch that part of the vid actually.
Well, one time they had a fan appreciation day. Like 20-30 people in the fan club won tickets, and I think like 5-10 won airfare and accommodations, to visit the band in HQ. I think it was around the time of St. Anger’s recording. Perhaps after Hetfield completed the rehab program. They took some pictures, filmed some of it, etc. Essentially, it was like a cookout, and then a little jam session where they took requests, etc., and everyone was just sitting around the studio. They even had people sign up to play bass, and then everyone voted for the best bassist, who won a bass signed by the group. How cool would it be to jam with Metallica?
As for The Day That Never Comes, there is definitely a strong similarity with Motorbreath at least. In TDTNC, at around the 6:50 mark, the rhythm guitar and bass play almost the same thing that is played at the beginning of Motorbreath. I guess that’s to be expected to some degree anyway. It’s certainly more acceptable than a band like Coldplay lifting a complete melody from Joe Satriani.
