Helena Bonham Carter
I don’t really like Helena Bonham Carter. I think most of that is derived from her connection to Tim Burton and particularly his films, but even without that I’m not sure I like her. The combination of her face and voice kind of bug me. As a result, I have only seen three things with her.
Mom and Dad bought a pre-viewed tape once of a movie called Lady Jane about Henry VIII’s daughter Lady Jane Grey. It had Patrick Stewart and Cary Elwes in it, and I watched it precisely for their appearances in the film. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t good either. I liked the Merlin mini-series that was shown on TV. She annoyed me in it though. She was equally annoying in Big Fish, and I really didn’t like that movie. I fully expected to not like it, but I watched it because of Ewan McGregor.
I do plan on seeing at least one more movie with her in it, but it pains me that she is in it. She is playing Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I think she will probably be OK, because I do think she is a fair actress. However, I think they should have cast someone taller and more beautiful, because that’s how she was described in the book. Either way, I have high expectations for the film. I just saw that Jean-Pierre Jeunet was asked to direct the film, but he turned it down. That would have been interesting.

I’m not sure. I wonder if his experience with the Alien series had anything to do with it. Maybe he didn’t want to be constrained with established elements of the movies.
I saw her in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! I knew I’d seen her in something else. I liked Big Fish. I thought it was pretty good. She is a bit odd. Great fit for Tim Burton movies :)
I just thought Big Fish was boring. Granted, I went in expecting to hate it, as I hate Tim Burton.

I love weird people and movies. Therefore, watching Helena and Tim Burton films is great fun for me. But then again I am quite the crazy one. :D
I have nothing against odd. I like odd. Tim Burton just tends to be predictably dark and quirky to the point that it becomes pretentious and annoying. I can never forgive him for Batman.
I must say that compared to the new batman, those old ones are stupid. The first ones were just dumb, and the ones in the middle were cartoonish. Granted, the kids really like the cartoon-like feel.
He only did the first and the second. The second one is the most pathetic of the group. But I blame him for setting the tone and low level of expectation.
There are two Burton films I actually like. I like Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Mars Attacks. Yet, I think most of that is due to me just liking Pee Wee and the cast in Mars Attacks.
Well, I don’t much care for the Batman movies mainly cause I don’t really like Batman the character. I did like Batman Forever cause of the cast (Jim Carrey, Drew Barrymore, Tommy Lee Jones, and Val Kilmer). Other than that I really don’t care for comic book turned movie…movies. Same dealio with Spiderman and Fantastic Four junk. Granted I haven’t seen the FF. But, I have no desire to do so.
Have you seen Batman Begins or the X-Men movies? They are all awesome, and particularly Batman Begins. What about the Batman character don’t you like? Is it just that he is a comic book character, or is it something more specific?
Oh, and the Fantastic Four was ok. Nothing great, but not horrible.
Ok Ok. I absolutely LOVE the X-Men movies. I love that some of the people had powers and the conflict to feel a since belonging and so on and so forth. I liked the Batman Begins. Although, even if money wasn’t a worry I still wouldn’t buy any of the Batman or Superman movies. I’ll watch them once (with the exception of Batman Forever which I’ll watch maybe twice a year) and then I’m good. I’m just not impressed enough with them to buy them or anything. Whereas I would buy all of X-Men stuff. I despised the Cat woman movie. Anywho, as for the Batman character…I don’t know. It doesn’t really makes since to me. With all the paparazzi around don’t you think that his little secret about being Batman would’ve gotten out since Bruce Wayne is a big shot? Famous people get stalked all the time. At some point wouldn’t his dirty little secret be revealed in real life? Somebody would’ve been able to identify his voice or something. Same deallio with Superman. I mean COME ON! Glasses no glasses. Seriously people. And with Superman…with his powers he could be doing so much more. He doesn’t seem to be using his powers wisely in my opinion.

As for Batman, you must remember that the comic was created in the 30s before paparazzi as we know it existed. Even in today’s world however, Bill Gates has privacy. Most of the people who are inundated by paparazzi are exposed because they want to be. They can protest all they want, but the simple solution to the problem is to withdraw from the spotlight.
Bruce Wayne, although a millionaire playboy, could still retain a degree of privacy, and especially so at Wayne Manor. The nature of Bruce Wayne is such that no one would or could get close enough to spoil the secret beyond Alfred. That is my one gripe with Batman Begins. The girl would have to die.
What makes Batman superior to virtually any other superhero is the fact that he is completely human. All of his abilities are those that can be found in the average person albeit at extraordinary levels. Still, his exploits remain feasible to some extent, and as such lend a connectivity that you just don’t get with other super heroes. It’s much harder to relate to Superman, because no one could possibly do what he can do. It isn’t nearly as hard to relate to Batman, because he is human and within reach.
Well, theoretically anyway.

I hate them for a couple of reasons. One, I hate the movies they make with but rare exceptions. They are all “dark,” and “quirky,” and so on. Read = irritating.
Tim Burton isn’t an amazing director. He is solid at best. To try and pass him off as one of the great directors of all time, or even of his era, is absurd.
Likewise, HBC isn’t a great actress either. As I said in the initial post, I feel she is a fair actress, but not even close to the best.
Essentially, I hate them because their die-hard fans try to pawn them off as the best thing since sliced bread. So, feel free to blame yourself for my hatred by claiming them to be “AMAZING” and “great” respectively. Come back to the discussion when you can be more objective.

I’ve repeated quite often what I really think of HBC and Burton. Which is to say, I don’t much care for their work as a whole. I find most of it repetitive, predictable, and dark and odd simply for the sake of being dark and odd.
That’s their work. I know very little of the people themselves. I’ve never made any judgments as to their character or personality. I don’t know enough to make such a judgment, nor do I really care to. I give them, as I give everyone else, the benefit of the doubt, and assume they are decent human beings until proven otherwise.
I don’t even hate their work so much as it just annoys me. I do hate when their vocal fans, such as yourself, claim them to be the greatest actress and director to ever live. As I said, I know very little of them personally, but I feel it highly likely that they’d disagree with such a statement. I’m sure they’re proud of their work, but that doesn’t mean they are pompous asses with an inflated sense of their work. I have favorites too, but I don’t claim them to be the BEST EVAR!!! I understand you’re fond of them, but tone it down a little bit, and people might take your opinions a tad more seriously.
I have mentioned a dislike of HBC’s face and looks. I further supplied the reason for it: she reminds me of someone I loath. Who that person is is irrelevant. I can hardly blame HBC for this, nor do I, but it does give me further reason to avoid her work.
While I was typing this, I noticed you posted twice more. Once, in complaint that I haven’t answered your questions. Patience is a virtue.
The other is a comment about Harry Potter, which further indicates to me your inability to read, as my initial post quite clearly states:
“I do plan on seeing at least one more movie with her in it, but it pains me that she is in it. She is playing Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I think she will probably be OK, because I do think she is a fair actress. However, I think they should have cast someone taller and more beautiful, because that’s how she was described in the book. Either way, I have high expectations for the film.”
For the record, I consider her performance adequate, much as I predicted I would. I still feel it was a miscast, but not the worse case scenario.
I love helena bonham carter, I think she is great! I can understand why you avoid her work if you think she looks like someone you don’t like; I do this too. I’m only commenting on here to defend her because she is one of my favorite actresses. I think she is a wonderful actress and pretty, as well. However, I see your side of the argument, too, and think you have argued your point well. I do suggest that you see Fight Club though. It is amazing, not only because of the acting, but largely because of the clever story and quotability of the script, which is what you seem to mainly judge movies by. Like I said before, I think Helena is a very talented actress, but I’ll admit that I’m probably a little biased,seeing as how I’m a huge fan. Hopefully I do not sound like an annoying, unintelligent fan that is the main cause of your dislike of Helena. :) Peace!

Sweeney Todd won several awards for best Musical or Comedy. They lump the two genres together. It was a musical. Be advised that it also won an award for Best Horror Film.

As for your suggestion that HBC is an exemplary actress because she’s won so many awards, I say poo poo. Some of the best actors and actresses haven’t won diddly squat, and some consistently subpar performers do win after scoring the role of a life time. For the record, HBC has never won an Oscar (the only award worth mentioning). She was nominated once, and lost. As I said, awards mean crap. This doesn’t prove she is a good actress, and it doesn’t prove she is a poor actress either.
I’m completely fine with the disheveled nature of Bellatrix after her years in Azkaban. As I said, I think HBC did OK with what she had. I still feel it a miscast however, because Bellatrix is supposed to be tall. We can disagree on the assessment of beauty, but even you must admit that HBC is anything but tall. She just didn’t look like the character as opposed to so much of the rest of the casting for the Harry Potter series. Again, I don’t hold that against HBC, but rather those who cast her.

Helena Bonham Carter is an amazingly talented and beautiful actress. You think she sucks, fine, that’s your opinion, it may be wrong, but still, it’s your opinion. I honestly suggest to you that you watch Fight Club, Sweeney Todd and Harry Potter as she is brilliant in all of those.

As for Fight Club, it just seems that much of the magic of that film would be lost on me as I know the twist. Seeing Sweeney Todd is out of the question. While I only dislike HBC, I hate Depp, and I cannot stand films that feature Depp, HBC, and Burton’s handiwork in tandem. I recognize that you love them, but I never will. Simple as that.

My problem with HBC is more of a physical issue rather than her acting. I feel that the casting for the Potter films has been extraordinarily strong across the board until the part of Lestrange was concerned. My interpretation of that part saw a tall, exceptionally beautiful women. While her beauty can be argued, HBC isn’t tall. Furthermore, she reminds me of someone who I loathe, and her delivery in Potter accentuates it. All things considered, the casting of that part could have been much worse, but I wasn’t 100% pleased with it either.
I think Depp is the most overrated actor working. He has shown skill, but typically dials in the same part over and over again. More power to him, as he is being paid quite well in so doing.
I might catch Fight Club on TV some time, but my perception of HBC isn’t likely to change. As I said, she reminds me of someone I know in real life, and I can’t get beyond that. I’ve heard good things about her performance in that film, but even if I was blown away by her acting prowess I would still try to avoid most of her work for the aforementioned reason.
For instance, I thought she was strong in Merlin, but still couldn’t stand watching her. There’s nothing she could do that would avoid that. The issue is my own.

Helena Bonham Carter isn’t quite what you’d expect. All these years into her career (she is now 41, and made A Room with a View and Lady Jane when she was barely out of her teens), she still seems fixed to a large degree in the public imagination as the Merchant Ivory poster girl – the perfect English Rose forever wafting elegantly around, looking fragrant and distressed in bustles and corsets.
In truth, Bonham Carter’s career has been more complex and interesting than that, and so, it transpires, is the woman. While Bonham Carter does have the posh vowels (she is the great grand-daughter of former prime minister Herbert Asquith), she is also disarmingly friendly and has an earthy (if not filthy) giggle, which she employs a lot. In short, otherworldly and ethereal Helena Bonham Carter is not.
Then there are her looks. For someone so long hailed as the definitive ‘English rose’, it turns out that Bonham Carter is a proud ‘mongrel’, boasting a Czech/Spanish/Austrian Jewish/French/Russian heritage. In person, as on screen, Bonham Carter is hauntingly beautiful, with a childlike face, brown-rimmed eyes and that great bush of wild electrocuted-looking hair that makes her look as if she’s rushed straight from some Bronte-esque melodrama on the Yorkshire moors.
Then, of course, there is Bonham Carter’s ‘unique’ dress sense. (The press love to snap her looking like a pile of Gothic laundry.) Though today, when we meet in a cafe near her north london home, she is disappointingly restrained in a black jumper and ruffled skirt. ‘I don’t think I dress eccentrically,’ says Bonham Carter, placing my tape recorder on the arm of her chair so that her tiny, tumbling voice can register. ‘I’m just not conservative, I guess – I dress according to what like. And I’m not a mannequin, as you can tell.’
At the time of our talk, Bonham Carter is also pregnant by her partner, leftfield Hollywood director Tim Burton, with whom she’s worked on projects such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish and The Corpse Bride (since their relationship began, she has often been referred to as Burton’s ‘weirdo muse’).
Bonham Carter and Burton already have a son, Billy, four, and, shortly after we meet, she gives birth to a baby girl. At our meeting she is still pregnant, and how – her bump is so big she can barely sit up properly and keeps threatening to slide off the chair.
‘Yes,’ laughs Bonham Carter, ‘I am technically about to have a baby. I could technically go into labour right now.’
She tells me she was working so hard on Burton’s latest project, a film version of Sondheim’s musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, that she didn’t think she could get pregnant. When she did, she wasn’t popular with costume and continuity. ‘If you look at the film and see my breast size, it goes up and down like a yo-yo. I have my usual tangerines and I walk around the corner and suddenly they’re melons.’ Sliding down in her chair again, Bonham Carter erupts into giggles.
We’re here to discuss Bonham Carter’s playing the pie-making Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd, also starring Johnny Depp in the title role as the throat-slashing barber.
Recently nominated for a Golden Globe, Sweeney Todd is as gruesome, murky and twisted as they come (blood and guts oozing everywhere). Depp and Bonham Carter are impeccably sinister, and rather brilliant, dramatically and musically, right up to the climax, where, throats having been slit, they bleed to a grisly crimson death. ‘It’s not feel-good,’ says Bonham Carter, by way of understatement.
Bonham Carter loved playing Mrs Lovett, and refers to herself as a ‘musical whore’. ‘I’ve always loved musicals,’ she says. ‘Tim thought I was making Billy gay because that’s all I’d sing to him.’ She even claims that singing for Sweeney Todd may have got her pregnant. ‘It was all the oxygen. And my pelvic floor has never been so fit. I’ve got great hopes that after this baby it’s going to bounce straight back.’
Bonham Carter adds that, contrary to what people might think, she does not get parts in Burton’s movies simply because they are a couple. ‘I really do have to be righter than right before Tim lets me do a part,’ she says. ‘Sexual favours don’t get me anything.’ In the case of Sweeney Todd, Sondheim had the final say over casting, and Bonham Carter auditioned for him. She describes getting the part as ‘the most absolutely amazing thing. I just could not believe it. Nor could Tim, actually. He burst into tears. And I burst into tears.’
I ask Bonham Carter if being with on set with Burton is a bit like being the teacher’s kid – always mindful of charges of favouritism, they criticise and ignore you more. She nods: ‘It’s inverted favouritism. Or maybe just sadism. Whatever the opposite of favouritism is.’
I point out that Burton uses Depp again and again, and nobody criticises that. ‘Tim doesn’t sleep with Johnny though,’ drawls Bonham Carter, deadpan. ‘I can vouch for that. He only sleeps with me.’ Her lips twitch. ‘But he and Johnny have a perfectly cordial relationship.’
The way Bonham Carter tells it, things occasionally got rocky between her and Burton on the Sweeney Todd set. ‘There are certain stresses that come with working together,’ says Bonham Carter. ‘There’s no pretence with us, you see. No “Let’s adopt our formal selves”.’
What sort of thing is she talking about? ‘Well, he was all: (growls) “How difficult is it to come through the door and cover that spot!” And I’d be (whines): “I’ve got wool in my head because I’m fucking pregnant, and there’s blood everywhere and I didn’t see it, all right?” And all I get is: “Action!”‘
During all this, says Bonham Carter, people working with them on set would either look down or away (‘Johnny was forever polishing his razors’). She grins: ‘One weekend, Tim and I came up with Indian nicknames for each other. I called him Big Chief Little Patience. His name for me was Little Squaw Running Mouth, ie I talk too much. Stay schtum!’

hey, just wanted to say that im a helena bonham carter/ tim burton fan. u never really said why u dont like them. not that you have to . you said she reminds you of someone you use to know? im sure that would naturally cause a bitter reaction. btw i agree with Vicki. you shouldn’t be scorned for not liking her , just like we shouldn’t be for liking her.

cool, ok, first.. lister your comments are absolutely awesome, we all have a right to leave opinions and make blogs wherever and whenever we see fit, (its a right humans have).. to gather the opinions of others for general educational purposes, (in whatever subject that happens to interest us at any point)and YES hbc’s fame is up there with being an interesting subject because IMO she is absolutely repulsive.. her acting is POOR, her voice is patronizing and manly in almost every role and seeing her today (again) in a cheap movie called mighty aphrodite, she was as useless and depressing as ever.. absolutely as far from beautiful as it may be possible to get.. i have never seen an uglier actress.. and almost made my dinner come up in terminator salvation, (besides the quiet, snubbed nosed, mixed race afro kid) who was also slightly disturbing.. johnny depp has also ruined some great classics as an actor.. thats very selfish and unprofessional but maybe he’s too up his own back side to realize.. as for tim burton, i think he knows he has no talent so tries to exploit his knowledge of the easily manipulated mass public with his shocking crap (which he does well) the lunatic obviously has to make a living too and obviously does it without a shred of consideration for the sane tasteful portion public.. there are many dark movies which are fantastic, man hasnt got a clue but came slightly close to engaging with edward scissor hands and corpse bride.. but hasn’t managed to make anything “good” while making a mountain of indisputable GARBAGE! im absolutely shocked she has one fan let alone a handful or more.. just goes to show how impressionable and susceptible some absolute idiots are to any old loser as long their being shown within the idiot box.. or big screen, most lapping up the “stars” without question. also if that girl really died, thats her parents fault for not getting the little psycho any help.. i think her career is built around everything UGLY and even SHE knows that.. being portrayed as beautiful would probably be considered an insult by her.. i guess she has done that well.. because i find everything she does comparable to an alcoholics vindaloo hangover vomit.. she is turd, she is incomparably mashed and disturbs me that a human can look so unattractive or sexy, shes a BEAST.. I just read your post and I have to say I agree almost wholeheartedly on the idea that Tim Burton makes his films odd and dark just for the sake of being odd and dark. However, as he is the only director doing these weird films it isn’t overdone (it easily could become if either Tim Burton made more or if there was more than him making them). I must say this, however, when Tim does an original film, ie Big Fish or Ed Wood, it is a solid film and I think the reason he is classified as one of the “great” directors of his tine is because he is different yet still brings in the $$$.
Helena is one area where I must disagree. While I can understand that you don’t like to look at her or whatever I think this post was unnessesary as you haven’t seen enough of her work to comment. Granted you’ve seen about 4 of her films, yet I believe you must see more before you can make a judgement on her acting. I agree that she wasn’t the best person to play Bellatrix visually however her acting turns the fact that she isn’t the Bellatrix described in the book into something that doesn’t even cross my mind (I am a devoted Harry Potter fan).
Helena is a fantastic actress and I think you should reserve judgement and watch a few more of her films before you say something.
Also, Molly is a physco and needs to go to school.

@Mary – The great directors are not limited by a genre. They are not one trick ponies. Tim Burton is good at one thing for sure, and he shovels that to the teenies that think its clever. Good on him for making a buck. I don’t begrudge him a thing, but I definitely don’t feel he is anywhere near the upper echelon of filmmakers in his relative generation. I’m not saying he is without talent, but that talent is utterly wasted by his predictability.
As for HBC, by my count I have seen seven movies, or in the case of Merlin a miniseries, with her. Your criticism would have been valid had I seen but one or two films. How many times do I need to put my hand in a hot flame before I can establish an axiom that indicates that doing so will burn me? How many times do I need to watch a HBC performance before I can accurately predict that her performance will be jarring, over the top, and that she will scream at least once before the movie is over?
I wait in partial dread to see the concluding Potter films, and that is in no small part due to HBC’s inclusion in the cast.
Having said that, this post continues to bring me chuckles, as HBC is not even my least favorite actress. That title remains with Renée Zellweger. My chief beef with HBC tends to be her imbecilic fans. So, thank you for bucking the trend, and stating your opinions in a rational and coherent manner.

I am a HBC fan, and personally think she is a complete English rose, quirky and pretty. Yes, she is a bit of a weirdo, but I think that adds to her charm.
I can understand your hatred of the repetitiveness of a Tim Burton movie, and the continuous casting of ‘Tim Burtons’ life partner’ and Johnny Depp. Seriously, when does it become polite not to keep pretending to be pleasantly surprised? But, they have become an auteurship together. Its expected, and has many fans. I love the predictable, gothy, misunderstood kind of themes that Tim has going on, and HBC and Johnny Depp compliment this perfectly.
With every star though, you will have rabid fans unfortunately, particularly 10 year olds who are searching for role models. Mine was Miranda Richardson- and I used to watch her in absolutely everything because I loved her. You have to make some allowanced, Molly is possibly quite a young girl, looking for a role model, and HBC gives her a nod to tell her its okay to be different and a bit edgy. This is why she’s defending her so much. Its devotion on par to a member of your family, I remember the feeling. Haha!
Hopefully, there is one film of HBC’s that I definitely recommend, it’s narrative is propelled by the dialogue, it’s split screen and very unusual. It’s called Conversations with Other Women, and is one of my favourite films. Completely bittersweet, and realistic. Fight Club is also very good, but if you do want to see HBC out of one of her crazy characters, please watch Conversations, I’m sure it will make you look at her in a very different way.

She’s actually very intelligent unlike all the dumb actresses. Doesn’t care what anyone thinks, she IS a good role model. In England she has done alot of voice overs on commercials and audio books. Want to know why? because she has a beautiful voice and is very well spoken. Maybe you should watch more of her films before you judge her, she was working with some great actors/actresses at a very young age and works extremely hard for every part she plays. much lavvv

My only issue with her looks (excluding costuming and makeup, etc.) is that she reminds me of someone I knew in real life who I despised. I don’t really care what she looks like. She isn’t my cup of tea, but I can see how she would be for others.
By the way, I thought she was solid in The King’s Speech. Maybe if she made more mature content I wouldn’t dislike her performances as much, and as a pleasant side effect, fewer of her mindless droves of fans would plaster inane comments on my blog.
